LAN party netwroking: Do I need a gigabit hub?
Im hosting a lan party of 30 people. I have one two 16 port linksys 10/100 switches and a 5 port D-Link 10/100/1000 switch. I have a dedicated DHCP & File server and some game servers.
The question is: Should I bother using the gigabit switch because neither of my 16 port switches have a gigabit up-link. (the servers do have gigabit nic’s)? Also, can my two 16 port switches cascaded together handle 20 people without lag? Or should I buckle down and invest in some big gigabit switches. I would hate to spend a couple hundred bucks if my lan party is not even big enough to make a difference.
You have 30 people, 100mbit connection divided by 30 people = 3mbps for each person. Should be more than enough, depends on the hardware.
