Self-Hosting VPS vs: what is good for me?

I have two hosting requirements: PHP and Rails. I had (bad) experience in hosting a site PHP in a shared server. I also briefly run a simple PHP server at a local hobby with low standards options. Now I am planning to launch a serious, large site (Ruby on Rails), and some small existing PHP sites, I can host or choose a Virtual Private Server? * I have a P4 3.0GHz / 1GB RAM machine I could spend on accommodation. * I am familiar with the general principles of computer security, programming and Linux * I have a Comcast cable connection (n No static IP) * I can not imagine spending much more $ 50 / Mo to start. I add all the details you consider relevant.
